Singapore makes largest ever illegal ivory seizure

first_imgSingapore: Singapore has made its largest ever seizure of smuggled ivory, impounding a haul of nearly nine tonnes of contraband tusks from an estimated 300 elephants, authorities said Tuesday. The illegal cargo, discovered Monday in a container from the Democratic Republic of the Congo being shipped to Vietnam via Singapore, also included a huge stash of pangolin scales — the third such seizure in as many months. Officials said both the ivory and pangolin scales were in a container declared to be loaded with timber destined for Vietnam and passing through Singapore, a major transhipment hub for global trade. Choice between Gandhi’s India and Godse’s, says Rahul Gandhi

first_imgNEW DELHI: Days after the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee expressed that there will be no alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, party chief Rahul Gandhi Monday urged booth level workers to win on all seven seats, indirectly confirming the move. Gandhi was addressing a meeting of booth-level workers of the Delhi Congress.Terming the upcoming Lok Sabha elections a contest between the Congress’ ideology of inclusivity and Narendra Modi and the RSS ideology of fear and hatred, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday promised a minimum income guarantee scheme for all the poor in the country if the party is voted to power. Also Read – Bangla Sahib Gurudwara bans use of all types of plastic itemsAddressing booth workers at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here, Gandhi ridiculed Modi for being a coward and said only the Congress can tackle the twin challenges of unemployment and the agrarian crisis. Exhorting party workers to reach out to the voters with theCongress’ message, Gandhi asked them to ensure that the party wins all the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. “The choice is between India of Mahatma Gandhi and that of his assassin (Nathuram) Godse. The fight is between Modi and RSS’ ideology of fear and hatred on one side and the Congress’ ideology of love and inclusivity on the other. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murder”The Congress will form the government in the coming elections as it is the only party that can change India,” Gandhi said while urging the party workers to spread the Congress’ message among the masses. Holding the Modi government responsible for two of the biggest challenges facing the country — unemployment and agrarian distress, Gandhi said the Congress will ensure a minimum income for all the poor as soon as it comes to power. “On the one hand you have Modi who waived loans worth Rs 3,50,000 crore of a handful of industrialists, and on the other you have the Congress which will implement the minimum income guarantee scheme immediately after coming to power,” said Gandhi. Explaining the scheme, he said the minimum income of the country will be calculated which will act as the standard and those below that level will be given the shortfall. “Nobody in the country will be below the minimum income level,” Gandhi claimed. “No country in the world has ever tried such a scheme, but we will implement it. In Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, we promised farm loan waiver and within two days of coming to power, we did that. Only the Congress can do it,” he asserted.last_img read more

South African woman makes landmark Everest summit

first_imgKathmandu: A South African business executive reached the top of Mount Everest on Thursday in what is believed to be the first summit of the world’s highest mountain by a black African woman. Saray Khumalo, 47, reached the top of the 8,848-metre (29,029-foot) mountain after three previous bids were thwarted by bad weather, injury and tragedy. Khumalo’s Summits with a Purpose expedition organiser said she was the first black African woman to reach the top of Everest. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince Salman ‘snubbed’ Pak PM Imran, recalled his private jet from US: ReportNepal’s Tourism Department confirmed that Khumalo had made the summit but had no record on whether she was the first black African woman. All Everest climbs were halted during her first attempt in 2014 when an avalanche killed 16 guides on the mountain. Khumalo is on a quest to conquer the highest peaks on each continent. MCA sees Rs 2.8 lakh cr recovery from IBC-led resolution process

first_imgNew Delhi: Terming the current insolvency process and its outcomes as ‘super success, Ministry of Corporate Affairs sees total recovery amount touching Rs 2.8 lakh crore through resolutions with the settlement of two key accounts, including some others — Essar Steel, where financial creditors have approved the resolution and Bhushan Steel and Power. “The 100 cases that have been settled through resolution accounts, Rs 1.8 lakh crore have been netted which is not a small amount and the accounts sitting on margin (Bhushan Steel and Power & Essar Steel), another Rs 1 lakh crore along with some other mid-sized resolutions can come, so Rs 2.8 lakh crore out of Rs 10 lakh crore of NPA that time is not a small amount, IBC is a super success”, says MCA senior officials on the insolvency processes In case of Essar Steel, the CoC has approved the resolution process but the process got stuck after operational creditor Standard Chartered moved NCLAT for higher share from the funds. The debt-ridden steel firm had Rs 42,000 crore coming from the resolution plan of global steel major ArcelorMittal. JSW Steel had revised its offer for Bhushan Power & Steel from Rs 11,000 crore to Rs18,000 crore and later to over Rs 19,000 crore which the CoC had approved. And it is not just resolution process-led recoveries, the official said pre-resolution processes have also yielded results in 6,500 cases netting Rs 3 lakh crore on dead assets. “6500 cases settled involving claims of close to Rs 3 lakh crore where they have been have settled before admission. And now after 12 (A) has been introduced, another 100 cases which are at stages of 90% CoC approval are moving towards out of court settlements. Both (in and outside resolutions and NCLT) are happening. About 500 cases have got settled through the court process and 6,500 cases settled even before admission”, said the officials. Section 12 (A) of IBC allows for a withdrawal of an insolvency application if 90% of the creditors’ committee (CoC) by voting share approving it. MCA officials dismissed the notion of high haircuts through resolution process. They said: “It (IBC) is super success. There should not be any brouhaha over haircuts. Will anybody pay more than what is the value? Suppose an asset is used for 20 years, there is nothing more to it, there is a Rs 50,000 crore loan, liquidation value is Rs 1,000 crore, so you get (the creditors) Rs 1,000 crore only.” “Wherever a resolution has taken place, creditors are getting 200% of the liquidation value. So definitely value maximisation is the context, demand and supply will fix the value”, the officials said.last_img read more

First place on the line for OSU field hockey

The No. 15 Ohio State field hockey team will square off with No. 8 Michigan State for first place in the Big Ten.The Buckeyes will head to East Lansing for their meeting with the Spartans Friday at 3 p.m.OSU is currently second in the Big Ten with a 3-1 conference record and the Spartans are alone in first with a 3-0 record. The winner will have the inside track to winning the Big Ten regular season championship and earning the number one seed for the conference tournament.Senior goalkeeper Lindsay Quintiliani and junior forward Jena Cacciatore have both stressed that winning the Big Ten is the team’s top goal this season.“We’re very confident this is our year,” said freshman forward Berta Queralt. A win over Michigan State would be a crucial step toward achieving that goal, she said.MSU holds the slight edge in the teams’ recent meetings, winning three of the last five. Both teams are riding hot streaks coming into Friday’s matchup. The Spartans are currently on a seven-game win streak, while the Buckeyes bring in a four-game win streak and have won 10 of their last 11.While the rankings seem to favor the Spartans, statistics are on the side of the Buckeyes. OSU leads the Big Ten with six shutouts this season — twice as many as the Spartans. Along with shutouts the Buckeyes are also atop the conference in goals against average with 1.38.The Buckeyes also edge out the Spartans in assists, due in large part to Queralt, who leads the Big Ten with 12.Queralt and forward Maria Briones have been named Big Ten Freshman and Offensive Player of the Week respectively. It is the second week in a row the teammates received the awards.Following Friday’s game, OSU will return home to face No. 13 Duke Sunday at 1 p.m. The game is Senior Day for the Buckeyes, as it is their final home game of the season. The Buckeyes will look to stay hot at home, where they are 8-1 this season, but a victory Sunday will be no easy feat. The Blue Devils enter the weekend with an overall record of just 8-7. However, their record is not a representation of their talent. Duke has played nine ranked opponents in their 15 games this season, including four games against the nation’s top three teams. Because of Duke’s tough schedule they have remained ranked in the top 20 all season. The Buckeyes are 2-3  this season against ranked opponents. The next two games will serve as a chance for OSU to prove it is among the nation’s elite. read more

Football Fields leads Team Gray to 3517 victory in Spring Game

Ohio State sophomore quarterback Justin Fields attempts a pass in the Spring Game on April 13 at Ohio Stadium. Credit: Casey Cascaldo | Photo EditorFor the first time since 2011, Ohio State football took the field for its annual Spring Game Saturday without Urban Meyer as head coach. While Ryan Day begins his first year at the helm, he and the Buckeyes will no longer be able to rely on the record-setting arm of Dwayne Haskins to start games under center at Ohio Stadium.Sophomore quarterback Justin Fields seemed to prove himself to be Haskins’ heir apparent as Ohio State’s starting quarterback Saturday, as he led Team Gray to a 35-17 win against Team Scarlet on 131 yards and 2 total touchdowns at the Spring Game.Day said both Fields and redshirt freshman Matthew Baldwin still have improvements to make.“They both did a good job today, they both flashed at times,” Day said. “It’s still a work in progress. We still got work to do.”After starting off 3-for-10, Fields displayed his playmaking ability when he uncorked a 98-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Binjimen Victor with under two minutes remaining in the first half to put Gray up 21-7. Matthew Baldwin played for both the Scarlet and Gray teams as he took snaps on the bulk of the possessions, going 20-for-36 with two touchdowns, two interceptions and a fumble. One of those scores was an 18-yard dart hauled in by freshman wide receiver and five-star recruit Garrett Wilson in the corner of the endzone to tie it up 7-7.Wilson finished with four catches for 44 yards and a touchdown and seemed poised to factor into an Ohio State receiving core that seeks to make up for the 195 receptions lost to Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon and Terry McLaurin.Redshirt freshman running back Master Teague started the scoring on Saturday with a 1-yard touchdown run. He showed another flash in the second half with an untouched 22-yard score to put Team Gray up 35-17.Teague put up a game-high 75 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. With Mike Weber foregoing his final year of eligibility for the Buckeyes, Teague will likely get more touches to help replace Weber’s 1,066 yards and six touchdowns from scrimmage in a backup role to junior J.K. Dobbins come fall, who recorded three carries for nine yards on Saturday.Fields showcased his speed on his first score as a Buckeye with a five-yard touchdown run on a read option to put Team Gray up 14-7 in the second quarter. The former Georgia quarterback frequently went to his legs as he finished just 4-for-13 passing and picked up 38 yards on the ground.“There were ups and downs,” Fields said. “That just comes with, as coach says, growing pains. So I just have to keep improving and keep working and I think it’ll be good.”Despite the “thud” tackling rule, implemented by Day to prevent injuries, the Gray defense was still able to generate turnovers in the first half. Junior safety Amir Riep picked off Matthew Baldwin on the first drive of the second quarter to set up a Team Gray touchdown and redshirt junior safety Jahsen Wint intercepted Baldwin and senior quarterback Chris Chugunov on consecutive possessions in the final two minutes of the first half.“We’ll just keep building from here, but there’s a lot of good pieces, a lot of good leadership starting to form out there,” Day said.Ohio State will open up its season on Aug. 31 against Florida Atlantic.Updated at 3:29 p.m. with quotes from Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and sophomore quarterback Justin Fields. read more

I’m trying to be the main man..“I’m 24 now and I think if I want my career to go where I do then I have to step up now instead of letting the big players change the game. I want to be the one to change games.Wilshere talks up Ryan Fraser credentials Taimoor Khan – July 3, 2019 Jack Wilshere says that Ryan Fraser has a great attitude to play for a club like Arsenal as the Gunners continue monitoring the youngster. Ryan…“I started out in League One and then Championship so to now be in the Premier League and try to be the main man there is massive.”“The one thing I noticed when I first stepped up to the Premier League is that no defender is slow,” said the left-midfielder.“It used to be that you would get some defenders who were slow but they were always tall and physically tough. But in the Premier League, everyone is quick and everyone is big and when you pay against teams like Man U and Chelsea, no one is under 5,8”, except maybe Eden Hazard, but he is on another level.“It is changing, though, with Man City having guys like David Silva and Raheem Sterling, I think it is more about technical ability now rather than everyone just being quick and strong.”last_img read more

But today only and while supplies last, Amazon has the Dash 6-quart air fryer in your choice of colors for $69.99.See it at AmazonNormally $100, the Dash air fryer is available in black, red, aqua or white.
